NuPoint.net Internet Setup Instructions: Windows 95, 98
& ME
For use with PCs running all versions of Windows 95, 98 or
Millennium Edition
The following instructions assume that your personal computer has the following already
installed:
- Windows 95 or Windows 98
- Microsofts Dial-up Networking software
- A modem (external or internal)
- An RJ-11 patch cord connecting the modem to a working phone line
Note that the screen shots included in this document were taken from a Win95 system.
Win98 systems will include the same Win95 options as displayed herein, along with
additional options which are not used for the NuPoint setup.
- Start your PC. If youre using an external modem, turn on the modem power.

- Double-click the My Computer icon located on the main desktop screen of your
Windows display. You should see a window similar to the one shown above open on your
screen. (Windows ME users, click START, SETTINGS, DIAL-UP NETWORKING,
then skip the next step...)
- Double-click the Dial-up Networking folder icon visible within the My Computer
window.
A window similar to the one shown below should appear. It will contain a Make New
Connection icon, and may already contain dial-up icons for other dial-up services.
(Note that if there are no dial-up connector icons in the Dial-Up Networking
window, later releases of Win95 and Win98 will automatically start the Make New
Connection setup wizard. If this occurs, skip the next step in these directions and
proceed from the Make New Connection screen.)
- Double-click the Make New Connection icon to begin the process of creating a new
dial-up connector icon.

- A Make New Connection wizard screen should appear, similar to the one shown
below. In place of the default name My Connection displayed in the name box, type Nupoint.net
as the name for this dial-up connector setup.
- The name of your modem should appear in the pull-down box located beneath the Select
a device: label. (The example below shows "LT Win Modem" in this sample
screen.) If the correct modem name does not appear, click on the pull-down arrow to
display the modem(s) available on your system, and select the desired modem.
i
Note: If no modem name
appears, your system does not have a properly installed modem available. In this case,
click the Cancel button, exiting the Make New Connection procedure, and
perform the steps needed to properly install a modem on your system.
- Click the Next button located in the lower right corner of the window to
proceed.

- Enter 765 in the Area Code box, then enter 675-3450 in the Telephone
number box. Click the Next button to continue.

- A message window appears confirming the creation of your new dial-up connector. Click
the Finish button to continue.
- Your new dial-up connector icon should appear within the Dial-Up Networking
window. If the new icon is not already highlighted, click the Nupoint.net icon ONCE
to select/highlight it. You will now make final adjustments to the new connector to allow
your system to properly dial the NuPoint Internet server.
- In the menu displayed at the top of the Dial-Up Networking window, click on the File
command, then select the Properties command from the menu.

- Click the check box located in the center of the General page next to the label Use
area code and Dialing Properties in order to clear the checkmark from the
display. (Note that older releases of Win95 contained the label Use area code and
country code for this option, but the control still services the same function.)
- If you are within the Tipton direct dialing area, enter 675-3450 in the Telephone
number: box, as shown in the example to the right. If you are in the 317 area code,
but can dial Tipton without a toll charge, you should enter 765-675-3450 in the Telephone
number: box.
- Click the Server Types tab located at the top of the properties screen (or the Server
Types button located in the lower right corner of the window in the older releases of
Win95
) to continue your setup.

- Make sure the Type of Dial-Up Server setting is set to PPP: Windows
- Within the Advanced options: group, only the Enable software compression
option need be checked. Clear other checkmarks in this group.
- Within the Allowed network protocols: group, only the TCP/IP protocol
option requires a checkmark.
(Note: The NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols do not need to be present to support a
standard Internet dial-up connection, but may be needed to support logins and software
functions if you are connecting to a corporate LAN or a running remotely controlled
software which may rely on one of these protocols.)
- Click the TCP/IP Settings
button to continue your setup.
- Make certain that the upper radio button group is set to Server assigned IP address.
- Click next to the left hand zero displayed in the Primary DNS: box. Using the
[BACKSPACE] or [DELETE] keys as needed, erase the initial zero. Type 198 in the
place of the initial zero, , then press the period [.] key to move the highlight to the
next position.

moves to the next position.

moves to the next position.
- Enter 50 in the fourth position.
- Click the OK button to store the TCP/IP settings you defined.
- Click the OK button on the overall properties screen to save the remaining
configuration and return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

dial-up networking connector on your main desktop screen, you can do it now by selecting File
and Create Shortcut from the menu at the top of the Dial-Up Networking
window, then clicking the Yes button on the confirmation window.
- Click the X in the upper right corner of the Dial-Up Networking window to
close the window.
- Click the X in the upper right corner of the My Computer window to close
the window.
This completes the standard Internet setup needed to connect with the NuPoint.net
Internet server. The next section discusses the steps needed to dial the server and
begin your exploration of the Internet.
Dialing the NuPoint.net Internet Server
After completing this procedure, your computer should be able to automatically dial
NuPoint.net Internet Server when you start either Internet Explorer, Netscape or your
Internet mail program by way of the Connect To screen shown below. The Connect To
window allows for entry of your username and password, and optionally offers a checkbox
controlling whether the password is maintained in the box each time you dial. Note that
when entering your password, the screen does not show the actual characters as you type,
displaying only asterisks. This is a normal security precaution.

- Double-click on your browser icon or dial-up networking icon on your desktop.
- At the Connect To window, enter your username and password as needed, using
lower case letters.
- Click the Connect button
- Windows 95/98 displays a series of messages in a small connection box indicating that it
is Verifying Username and Password, and finally Logging onto Network. At
this point you should be connected. If your system is unable to establish a connection,
make note of any error messages which may be displayed and contact NuPoint Technical
Support at 765-675-7087 for assistance.
After completing your dial-up procedure, you should be able to browse the Internet
using Microsofts Internet Explorer (provided with Windows 95/98) or Netscape, and
send/receive e-mail using the e-mail application of your choosing. The following is some
information concerning e-mail configuration:
SMTP Server Name: nupoint.net POP3 Server Name: nupoint.net Server type: POP3
News Server: news.nupoint.net
